A commuter train has derailed and three carriages have over turned leaving 30 injured and many feared dead following a collision with a truck on Tuesday.

Four cars of a Southern California Metrolink commuter train tumbled onto their sides after slamming into a truck on tracks in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles. The truck then burst into flames.

The crash was reported at 5.44am on Tuesday and has left at least 30 injured, according to officials.

Footage from a KABC-TV news helicopter showed firefighters treating numerous people at the scene.

Metrolink's website says the train was on a run from Ventura County to Los Angeles.

According to KABC, Ventura County fire officials said that at least one person has died.
