A Canadian man charged with killing a two-year-old boy in an alleged drunk driving crash in 2013 claims he was recently kidnapped and tortured by three men, who beat him and cut off his finger with gardening shears.

Police say that Richard Suter, 64, shifted his SUV into drive instead of reverse and crashed into a restaurant patio in Edmonton two years ago, allegedly while under the influence of alcohol, killing toddler Geo Mounsef.

However Suter says that last Thursday he was abducted from his home in Riverbend about 11pm.

He said three men claiming to be police grabbed him, saying: 'You know what this is about.'

In an interview with the Edmonton Journal, Suter says the men handcuffed him, put a bag over his head and then loaded him into a car.

They then drove him to a field somewhere outside the city, he said.

Threre, he claims they viciously assaulted him.

They also chopped off his thumb with what he believes was gardening shears.

'I must have passed out before they started beating on my face, because the next thing I woke up alone in a rural setting,' he told the paper.

'I just had my bathrobe on and some snow boots.'

Suter says he was able to get to his feet, walk to the road and flag a passing car.

He was rushed to hospital for surgery, but the location of his thumb was unknown so it could not be reattached.

Suter had numerous other injuries and said he thought he might die.

Suter said he did not recognize the voices of any of his alleged kidnappers, believes they to be in their 20s, and said they are likely 'professional criminals'.

'I think it was a job someone was hired to do,' he told the Edmonton Journal.

'And they did it.'

Suter will soon stand trial for the death of Geo Mounsef.

He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and refusing to give a breath sample

The crash occurred in October 2013 at Ric's Grill in Terwillegar.

Mounsef was pinned under Suter's car and later died in hospital.

After Suter was charged, his wife was assaulted in a parking lot.

The Mounsef family have responded to news of Suter's abduction.

'Justice For Geo will not come in the form of violence,' the boy's mother, Sage Morin, wrote to Facebook.

'Our family remains hopeful and entrusting of the legal system to bring Justice For Geo.

'It is utterly heartbreaking to have our baby Geo's memory associated with this horrible act of violence.

'We will continue to spread love and kindness in Geo's honour as we prepare for the upcoming trial.'
