Golden Retriever hilariously fails dog obedience competition

Just when you think you understand your dog and he understands you, it can all fall apart unexpectedly.

One young woman entered her Golden Retriever into an obedience competition in Finland, confident in the knowledge that her furry friend would follow her every command.

At the Koira Mestari canine competition, dogs are tested on obedience, concentration and speed. but something distracted the Golden boy and before long he was sniffing his way around every object and chewing through every snack that was put in his way.

In the end, with the judges looking at their watches, his exasperated owner had to come and drag him by the collar in order to complete the challenge and get him off the course.

The gauntlet of treats, toys and snacks were simply too much to resist but it made for some entertaining viewing.

Mmm, did I eat yet? Dogs participating in the contest on Finnish TV are supposed to navigate an obstacle course of strategically placed distractions, such as plates of food, balls and plush toys

It's like Christmas! With their focus and willpower on the line, some dogs pass with flying colours as they run to their owners when called, but this Golden Retriever was in heaven as he was attracted to everything in his way

Wow, more food! This Golden Retriever had different priorities – priorities that involved a bite of every snack and a brief bit of fun with every toy in his path

Have I taught you nothing? Despite the best efforts of his owner, the pup was much more interested in the food, toys and water on the side of the course than in the race itself
